If you are web developer you should already have installed Firebug because it makes life so much easier for the DOM/CSS/JavaScript programmer. Get it now (I mean it!) from addons.mozilla.org.
Hurray for Google making up for all the shoddy work Microsoft has done on their browser. IE7 is coming out soon with a lot of fixes, but still not quite up to par with the rest of the civilized browser world.
On work I dock my iBook on a Dell setup with LCD display and keyboard and mouse combo. This setup works pretty well but the reverse position of the Command and Option keys on the Dell keyboard was driving me mad.
It seems like Apple is in a confused place. Maybe an intrinsic part of the creative process, but being more thoughtful about the real world should not hurt them too much.
Stories of Microsoft changing are doing the rounds, but one thing they don’t seem to be able to change is their inability to release Vista (press release).
I’m attending the Magnus ‘Power to the People’ seminar this Thursday in Amsterdam. The theme of this seminar fits in perfectly with my Masters project and I thought it would be good to get out and meet some new people, exchange some ideas.
I have a big list of light reading, idea-heavy non-fiction which sort of fits in with my Masters project and with today’s payday I thought I would splash out on a bit.
Katie recently announced (Upcoming, Macwereld) on April 21st. CocoaDevHouse is an Amsterdam incarnation of similar popular unconferences across the world.
The Laszlo Application Platform was already quite impressive with its XML descriptors rendering into full fledged Flash applications. Now on Ajaxian you can see that they can also render into Ajax so no more Flash.
Alex Russell recently gave three presentations on JavaScript, one at FOSDEM and two at ETECH. Some of it is basic stuff, some of it is more advanced and some of it is controversial.
Thank god Google has remembered how to make useful stuff. The Safe Browsing extension (which is going to be integrated into Firefox proper) is something that users —especially naive ones— can really benefit from via.
Every week I get a mailing from Filmhuis Lumen —my favorite art house theatre— with their movie schedule in it. I was entering them into my iCal as events when I got bored with the repetitivity and the obsolesence of the task.
At first I thought it was a cheesy rip off but this video actually very nicely demonstrates the difference both in philosophy and execution between Microsoft and Apple.
Why does every operating system known to man have a decent facility to set up dual heads with mirroring and extending options and boxes representing the head and its position with respect to the other head.
Alex Russell has posted his presentation on FOSDEM about advanced Javascript usage. Interesting scan and nice mix of advanced js trickery and bits and pieces of dojo.
I managed to make it to the Happy Clog meeting (pictures) one hour late. It was fun having a couple of drinks in de Bruine Boon and talking about standard standards stuff.
Cool stuff about pluggable type systems at Lambda. I’m not academic enough to understand all the nuances of the arguments posed, but I do enjoy any type of argument against static typing.
I was writing my literature report in Wikitext and that was working fine up until a point. My teacher had already complained that the resulting print version was not as readable as could be. I do agree with him and I would not want him to be distracted with such trivialities so I went looking for a solution.
The feature list for KDE 4 is pretty impressive and is a nice pre-emption of Vista. They are both adding a slew of necessary features and innovating around a number of areas.
Ok, that was slightly uncomfortable. I had installed the 10.4.5 OS X upgrade —quite petite at 6,5 MB— yesterday night and I had just rebooted when I was confronted with a password screen.
There are some hot new videos up on Miguel’s blog showing very sizzling Gnome desktop hardware acceleration. Watch the video’s, especially the cube variant.
The literature study part of my graduation has taken long enough both schedule wise and with regards to the effort invested. I have a next milestone deadline this week on the report and I am not planning to spend much more time on it after that.
Old-school tech companies are very stubborn and not really agile enough for the new world order. Even Apple, poster boy for everything that is cool, does not really get it.
The browser wars have returned in earnest. Firefox market share has been growing steadily and it is making inroads in Internet Explorers market with a superior product, aggressive marketing and a loyal fanbase.
