There are cases where it may be better to shut things down.

The PHP foundation’s response looked inadequate and not well coordinated. The exploit was leaked and the fix was neither expedited nor rolled out quickly. The consortium of companies that participated in the release were mostly interested in using this security incident as a marketing opportunity. The details of how the response was fumbled and how to improve it is something that will be discussed in the following days. PHP and other orgs have promised improvements to their governance and processes.

The fixes have been back ported to older versions of PHP by a third party who filled the gap left by the official PHP release cycle. Even then, for large parts of the internet the fix may never happen. The fundamental nature of PHP as a technology and the governance they can effect do not seem in any way suitable to the scale of the problem they have let loose on the world.

PHP’s nature is that as a programming language it is bad. It had a moment and that moment passed decades ago. Software is subject to a lifecycle. Perl is dead for all intents and purposes. Ruby is well past its prime and should be considered legacy software sooner rather than later.

The only correct answer to yesterday’s exploit as a professional software organisation is: “We don’t run PHP.” Nobody should be deploying PHP on the internet in this day and age. That a privacy focused enterprise collaboration suite such as NextCloud is written in PHP is laughable.

Large C/C++ codebases like the PHP one are fundamentally unsecurable. There’s nothing that tells us we won’t see 10 more exploits of this scale coming out in the next years. Every poorly maintained online PHP property should be considered to be toxic waste. Yes, that includes all of Wordpress.

The only way out is to either port the language itself to a memory safe language or to port your code to something less exploitable. Both manoeuvres are practical enough these days that there’s no excuse not to do it. Nobody is locked into anything anymore and it’s hard to believe that writing PHP in particular is the thing that makes somebody’s heart sing. I have no stakes in it but probably if all these people would just write Go, a lot of this could have been avoided. I moved this blog off Wordpress to Hugo with some help from Claude and it has been a blessing.

Open source maintainers often complain about their lack of resources to do the tasks they ‘need’ to do. Undoubtedly they are right, but since we only have so many resources to go around it’s probably better to cut and focus rather than try to keep every project alive and secure. One answer to a lack of resources and recognition can be to just drop the work. Why would you keep going while at the same time complaining about it? Most people who believe they can’t be replaced are entirely wrong.

We don’t need this many interpreted web languages. More generally we don’t need half a dozen open source libraries doing the same thing. Sometimes the mature thing can be even for a project that is very ‘successful’—especially if that success is by now mostly toxic—to consider the project finished, cut a final release and archive the repos.

Gruber has a point here. I also enjoy Mastodon more than I do Bluesky and my feed does have a bunch of interesting things in it. But truly, there is zero “action” there.

The people who build it even pride themselves on it. When the design goal is to be dull, that’s an easy one to hit.

They start talking about how offline people are usually disadvantaged in some way, but that can’t be the reason because you can get online with a prepaid plan and a second hand Android phone for a couple of bucks these days. Hearing the people coming to the digital support hotline talk, many of them do not see the point of or any need to be online. And that is a different problem altogether.

One of the reasons mentioned “a lot of negative coverage of the internet in the media” tallies with my own assessment. German journalists, politicians and lawyers have done their best to scare the living daylights out of people here1 and dissuade them from the internet and new developments in general. The damage done is significant but this broken mess is the society people here want to live in.

My crank explanation for why they did that is because Axel Springer went to California and saw that they were infinitely behind when it comes to online and needed time to catch up. Cue lots of BILD headlines about the “dangers of the digital” and you can delay developments in a country that’s already behind. ↩︎

In ieder geval hier staan dus mijn oude minirecensies: http://www.moose.nl/moosers/alper/minirecensies/index.html

Flickr

Flickr has not generated any positive interactions in years. You can keep posting your pictures there but the place is pretty much dead. The main reasons for being on Flickr Pro were mostly nostalgia, habit and the hosting of the embedded pictures.

During the move to Hugo I pulled all Flickr pictures into the offline bundle so not that much stuff should break. Also breakage is an essential part of the internet.

I’d like to see if I can pull my data and put it into an Immich server, but otherwise I’m fine with having a local archive of everything and calling it done.

Apple Developer Account

I’m paying €100/year for the privilege of being able to keep Cuppin.gs on the App Store. That is a benefit, but the amount of money is low-key extortionate.

It does not make that much sense for Cuppings to be an iOS app anymore and I’ve started a push to turn it into a location aware web application. When I get that done, I can stop paying Apple and leave the closed system for good.

More services that I should exit but that are not that pressing:

Goodreads

Spotify

Komoot

Reading back all those old posts and weeknotes I have here is super nice and reminds me:

Keeping a record of things is really valuable. Just write and trust that it will come in handy at some point.

I used to do so many things in a given week. Compared to what I’m doing now, my life was insanely eventful.

I was consistently (too) early on a lot of things. For instance: I read myself complaining about restaurants and food in Amsterdam, something which is mostly solved now.

Reasons to Move

        #

The main reasons why I’m moving away from Wordpress:

Poorly configured hosts have botched UTF-8 on MySQL for so many times now that the entire blog was riddled with weird encoding errors. I tried a while back to get them out with custom SQL statements, but it turns out I wasn’t successful. PHP/MySQL is losing adoption and the more people refuse to use it, the sooner it’ll die.

Web2.0 seems to have been a mistake and is being rolled back entirely. The whole concept of having your own web property that other people can write to (leave comments and other things) has gone away. That means also there’s no need for a dynamic website with database anymore.

Even the cheapest hosting is not that cheap anymore. I’m at Vimexx and, because I didn’t have an exit, in September I was forced to pay €102.441 for a year of hosting. That money does not buy me anything other than poorly usable, super outdated admins and a base that won’t run anything other than PHP shit apps. I’m keeping my stuff on there, since I already paid, but this time I won’t be forced to renew.

Matt Mullenweg has gone off the deep end as have many tech leaders during the Trump administration. I’ll admit that this is minor but still worth mentioning.

Hugo

        #

Hugo is an interesting mix of popularity, openness and customizability. It’s written in Go, so it’s fast and the code is relatively nice to work with. They’ve gone through a bunch of re-architectures, so maybe by now they’re stable.

Most importantly having everything in markdown makes it easier for me to control what’s happening on the blog than having to deal with a slow database and bad editors.

Fixing the encoding errors was mostly a Claude assissted find and replace job over the entire body of files (see: 57e5c81 and 93d9e2a). And now I can be fairly sure that they won’t come back because the connection to the database didn’t have a magic parameter specified.

Also I’d like to see if I can add more content types here. I use Obsidian for Notes so that is its own vault of markdown files. I think it’d be interesting to see if I can add some of my old data exports and things like reviews on other sites here as their own data type. I’ve always wanted that but building and managing my own Django site for that seemed too much work.

More than 100 euros! Vimexx claims they’re still the cheapest but have been very regularly pushing “pricing adjustments”. The prices they list on their website are without BTW. ↩︎

This seems to have gotten stuck in my drafts with tons of other things. Fun to have a memory of the first UX Book Club meeting that I organised back in December 2009.

The show itself needs almost no introduction since it’s become a mainstream online phenomenon. Subway Takes features comedian and musician Kareem talking to NYC personalities who share their “takes” during brief subway rides.

He ventures outside of New York once in a while, and after London and Paris, has now turned up in Berlin.

The U-takes started with a masked party-goer declaring that “It’s actually good for you to party for 72 hours.” Next came local comedian Aurel Mertz with a pedestrian and mildly funny take about exercise. The party-goer made a return appearance after the aforementioned 72 hours of partying. And the latest episode features an American investor affecting an exaggerated German accent.

These three characters could not be a better reflection of the city of Berlin and where it’s at. A guy stuck in a party, unable to get out; a Southern German guy slumming it here until it’s not ‘fun’ anymore; and an investor mining the city for cash and clout. These are the people who shape the city, and for all of them, this place is a playground.

What I take away from these Subway Takes is that Berlin is a place where nothing matters and everybody is passing through. Could they have even found a real Berliner to talk to? That’s a question that’s probably best not even asked.

That’s not really different from deep dives into DNS, TLS, CORS etc. The things we use to build the internet have become (out of necessity) incredibly specialized and complicated.
